FAQ

Here are a few of the most common questions that people have about the festival.

  • Is there a cost to attend?

Thanks to the generous support of our amazing sponsors, the main Sounds of the Zoo festival is completely free and open to everyone!

This festival is a gift to the community—but it truly takes a village to keep it thriving. We welcome and encourage suggested donations to help support the artists, programming, and future growth of the event.

If you’d like to contribute, you can do so easily by clicking the donate button on our website or visiting this link: Support Sounds of the Zoo. Every donation, big or small, helps keep the music alive!

Please note that Sounds of the Zoo Presents events held outside of the main festival may not always be free. Be sure to check individual event listings for ticket prices or cover charges.

  • Is this an all ages festival?

Yes, Sounds of the Zoo is an all-ages festival!

The majority of our concerts, workshops, and events are open to all ages. Bronson Park, our main festival location, is a family-friendly Kalamazoo city park that welcomes everyone.

We also encourage families to check out the Children’s Nature Playscape—a beautiful, natural space in downtown Kalamazoo where kids and families can play, explore, and connect with nature.

Please note that some Sounds of the Zoo Presents events at partner venues may have age restrictions. Be sure to check individual event details for any age limitations.

  • What if it rains?

Sounds of the Zoo is a rain-or-shine event! Outdoor performances in Bronson Park will continue as scheduled, even in light rain. However, if severe weather conditions arise—such as lightning or a tornado—we may need to pause or cancel for safety reasons.

Any weather-related updates or changes will be announced through our social media channels and email, so be sure to stay connected for the latest information. Postponements are rare and will only occur if absolutely necessary for the safety of our artists, audience, and crew.

  • Where can I park?

Downtown Kalamazoo offers a variety of parking choices, including paid parking garages, surface lots, and metered street parking. Many of the Sounds of the Zoo venues throughout the week also have convenient parking nearby.

  • Will alcohol be available?

Yes! Most venues during Sounds of the Zoo will have bar access for guests 21 and over with a valid ID.

At Bronson Park, you can enjoy a drink as part of Kalamazoo’s Downtown Social District. The park is located within the Central Commons Refreshment Area, which allows you to purchase alcoholic beverages from participating businesses and enjoy them while you walk, shop, or relax downtown. Learn more about the Social District here.

Please note: each venue has its own entry policies and age restrictions. For example, Bell’s is 18+ for entry, and guests 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Be sure to check each venue’s guidelines before attending. Bronson Park remains an all-ages location.

  • What can I bring?

We encourage you to bring chairs and blankets for the outdoor events that do not obstruct the views of others. Umbrellas and shade tents are discouraged as they can inhibit the viewing experience for others. Snacks are allowed at the public parks, but please do not bring outside alcohol to any of the Sounds of the Zoo venues, in accordance with social district and local laws. You may record or photograph all our events, but do not use flash photography as it is distracting to the artists.
